This book begins with an improbable gift—a spark that crossed 9,000 miles to find me.
In its quiet arrival, it led me back to a dream I had set aside decades ago. And long before that, another unexpected kindness set my feet on the path I still walk today. These gifts ask only one thing of us: to hold them with gratitude and to carry their light forward when we are able.
And so, in honor of the people whose generosity shaped my life, I am donating my royalties from this book to children’s literacy programs, a cause that has been close to my heart for nearly thirty years. It feels right that the gift which returned me to my words might help place words into the hands of children.
